What is counselling?
Very often when we are anxious or stressed we find it difficult to make sense of things.
Everything just spins around in our head and we never get anywhere. Counselling gives you the space to explore all your issues in a safe non judgemental environment.
How often do we feel really listened to? If we go to family and friends, they care about us, but very often will give you their opinion. This is okay for them, but doesn’t usually help you find your own way through things. Speaking to a counsellor is different, because counsellors are only interested in what is best for the client, and by really listening, and being in the client’s shoes, can be an impartial sounding board. When issues are explored by someone impartial, clients get clearer about what they want to do or, about issues that have affected them from the past.
What is Person- Centred counselling?
This type of counselling was developed by American psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1930s.
There are many other forms of therapy available like Psychodynamic, Solution-Focussed, Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis (TA) and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT). However person-centred counselling is more about building a nurturing, trusting, relationship than a particular way of working. The relationship in person-centred counselling has, in recent studies has been proven to provide the right environment for a therapeutic healing process to happen.
